Indie Week and the Membership Drive for CIUT
Hey everybody
I am torn between two passions this week.
Love to support live independent music. Even was asked to weigh in on two of the lineups this year as a judge (more like an awestruck listener and fan, actually) during Indie Week here in Toronto.
Love Love LOVE my radio station because as a part of the community that lives and breathes all things CIUT, I would be lost without it.
The show on Fridays is only a small part of the whole picture. There are the submissions from artists as they try out new material or make that first step as a fledgling band. There are emails to answer, blogs to post, playlists to set and burn to disc and review before air time. There is Facebook (two accounts) and Twitter and Radioflag to check and post on. There is stuff to put in the mail for listeners (paid for by yours truly, no station money goes to this) And of course listening to all the fine programmes that make up the rest of the week.
ANYWAY, between the two there is a lot of love and support flowing to the talented musicians out there and also to the listeners who share the excitement about indie music with me
Please show your support to the Station That Could this Friday during Ruby Slippers. All the deets about how to do this are on the website at www.ciut.fm
And then treat yourself to some live music at any of the venues listed on the Indie Week website.
As I always say, there are no wrong choices when it comes to music in this city.
Thanks so much for listening.

Ruby Slippers September 30 7-8 pm Hello October!
Hey everybody!
So excited, the first leg of the fall is done, the nights are cooler and October is tomorrow with pumpkins, a reason to wear orange other than incarceration, and Halloween.

Enjoy

In case you wonder why the Fab Four made both this and Catwoman fill in playlists, I saw "Eight Days A Week" this Monday and it inspired me. This doc was endorsed by Yoko, Olivia Harrison, Paul and Ringo and was backed by Apple Corp. Not to mention that it was a Ron Howard film.
Great rare footage and a well balanced film from the point of view of the band itself.
Thanks for listening.

Ruby Slippers September 9 7-8 pm
Hey everybody!
OK so the first week back to school and work for some as well. How's it going? Exciting? Maybe not so much, right?
Well, if it's any consolation, I still have dreams about the start of school and not knowing where classes are, or not recognizing the questions on an exam or any number of other fears that go along with post Labour Day. So to combat that, this week's list is different and rather defiant in places, particularily the first track. Just remember, there can't be Halloween without the fall.
Blank Generation...Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Punk or Lust ... Beach Slang
Final Curtain for a drama Queesn ... The Wet Secrets *
Girls Fight! ...Vailhalen *
Hard to Explain ... The Strokes (retro)

See The Rain ... Aquafaux

Bride In Cold Tears ... Tangerine Dream
Autumn ... The Strawbs
BTW given the incredibly hot and humid drought-summer we have had, might recommend Liz Worth's (of the oral history of Toronto punk, "Treat Me Like Dirt") "PostApoc" Disturbing yes, but compelling reading and honestly struck home.
Thanks for listening. Next week, playlist for the TURF festival.

Summer is festival season as you all know and with it comes my favorite tiny (relatively speaking) perfect event, Hillside festival , happening this weekend at the Guelph Conservation area. As is the tradition on this show, I have put together a playlist of some of artists who will be there as sadly, I will not. Secret Toronto and Guilty Confessions
Hey everybody!
Living in a city as vast and diverse as Toronto one can easily get overwhelmed and default to the more local and familiar when planning an outing.
I know I am often guilty of that. Same principle kind of applies to music as well. Although Ruby Slippers is an open format programme, I am more comfortable with punk, garage, rock and indie (whatever that may be now)
However, thanks to a convoluted series of events, this summer I have sought out more electronic music than ever before. Who knew that there was a retired air traffic controller in New Brunswick embracing Tangerine Dream-esque music or that Hamilton stands toe to toe with the electronic community?
And I won't even get into Toronto or the rest of the global community brought together by the magic that is the interweb.
So here's the thing. Got on a shuttle bus at Chester station to go to the Evergreen Brickworks. New place for me, moving out of the comfort zone, apparently one of Toronto's gems off the beaten track. Apparently after the place shut its doors as a working brickyard, it had another secret life as an unofficial venue for events with, you got it, electronic music.
And guess what? That's exactly what is happening today until after midnight (although everyone is included in the party, not so hush hush)
The event is #Senseless and the music is perfect in this place. The shape and acoustics of the structure lend themselves very well to the sound and there is loads of room to move. As an added bonus, the guts of the building have ideal spots to showcase digital art and small 3D installations. I was there right at the start of things, not many had arrived yet but it did allow a clear path to see and experience the sights surrounded by the sound.
Featured cuts by Frank and Tony, Tube and Berger last night on the show (Ruby Slippers, up in archive for listening or download on Monday on the CIUT website). Honestly could have posted any of these artists in the playlist and may do so as the summer rolls out.
If you are into this music, love to dance or just experience something amazing, go to this place.
You'll be glad you did.

Ruby Slippers June 24 2016 7-8 pm
Hey everybody!
Having a rest from a couple of music weekends? I certainly am, kinda dogging it this week.
Lots 'o good music but from my own library rather than from new sources or a themed playlist.
I always keep a special tab in iTunes for things I haven't played in a while but always intend to.
Sometimes a girl has to just kick back and gather her thoughts with a cuppa.
So... here it is. ( I might mention though that the track by The Box Tiger is new new new.)

Mechanical Lover ... Earth and Fire
Angels ... Black Mountain *
I Made The Law ... The Acorn *

As the last day of another great NXNE here are your choices, broken down for your listening pleasure.

Saturday for NXNE 2016 Day Six-o
As if there isn't enough to do on a regular Saturday, NXNE explodes with possibilities.
If you are of a mind to spend the night near a large body of water, Portlands is the place for you.
Between the Commish and the Canal stages, there are a boatload of acts that will keep you there for the duration including Land Of Talk, Dan Mangan, Mothr Mother, Born Ruffians, Zolas and so much more. The music starts sometime after 1 this afternoon, noise ordinances you know. Can't stay too long in the area as the evening progresses.
BUT this just means that you can then hit some of the clubs.
Velvet Underground included Elliot Vincent Jones and Doldrums in their lineup.
The Bovine, for those who are into something way heavier, include Sumo Cyco and Diemonds
The Horseshoe has a good lineup and ends the night with Cat and the Queen around 2 ish.
Silver Dollar Room presents Good Kid, Vypers and Tdot's own Black Fever (fan fav at CIUT)
Smiling Buddha has Honduras and So So Glos as well as a host of others
And the Great Hall has the Night Owl festival showcase of psychedelic goodness with the likes of Acid Dad, Shmu and Hot Garbage.
If all this doesn't turn your crank, not sure what will.
See you tomorrow.
Friday, 17 June 2016
NXNE Day Cinqo (Five-o)
Wow, kids!
Tonight is the first evening of the Portlands experience. Two stages, no waiting. Better have your wristbands ready to go. Whether it's the Commish stage or the Canal stage, there is loads to hear including the likes of Ghostface Killah. Nice evening to be down by the water.
But for those of us who are more club oriented, here are some unbiased and random picks.
Lee's Palace has Diana, Cold Specks and Escondida
Hardluck Bar hosts Danny Rebel, The Beatdown, THE BRAINS and others.
Two words at the Bovine...Cancer Bats. Just saying.
Nocturne hosts Squid Lid and Peter Turns Pirate (in keeping with the Pirate radio thing, right?) among others
For a full list to choose from, run don't walk to www.nxne.com/schedule
See you all tomorrow!

The Garrison has "supergroup" Tuns with members of Sloan, Superfriendz among others: with Kiwi Jr and Only Yours.

Monday Day Uno for NXNE also Tuesday Day Two-o
Well, kids, it's that time of year when TO, undisputed Music City that it is, hosts our answer to that shindig in Austin.
Yup that's right.
It's North By Norht East time and man oh man, the bands are coming out swinging.
Each day or so, yours truly will post some options for you. As always, this is not a popularity contest, just what looked interesting to yours truly. HOWEVER you will never ever ever go wrong with any of the shows, just sayin'.
And might I add that there are also other things to do, like gaming and conferences and stuff, but this is a music blog so that's what's going on here.
As a bit of a taste of the bands gathered together under the banner Clubland here's the link to some of their stories as compiled by the team at NXNE
http://nxne.com/band-bios-club-land/
And here's my list.
Monday starts off with a punch at the Legendary Horseshoe with Eagulls and others (see above band bio) What better way to start a week of music given that it's a school night?
Tuesday has a couple of options:
Horseshoe once again pulled out the stops with a rare collections of bands featuring MSTRKRFT
Rumour has it that this one has already sold out (wristbands not withstanding) but you just never know.
AND the Silver Dollar comes up strong with a solid lineup including Dead Projectionist and Moving Units. It's a fairly small venue so if this is your thang tonight, head out early.
A nice way to start the week, right? The choices are easy and good ones.
Tomorrow, on the other hand, might get weird.
See you then.
