Ruby Slippers Friday Dec 28 7-8 pm

Hey everybody!

Hope your Christmas was a gas, and that your are revving up for a rockin' New Year's eve.
I know I am, with some vino, a warm puppy and movies on demand.

Ah, bliss!

Anyhow, here it is, the playlist for today.  Had to delay posting it, as I was sincerely hoping to surprise you all with a show by Chris and Dan Berube, legendary around CIUT, but it was not to be :(

Holiday Addendum to Dec. 21 Ruby Slippers

Hey everybody,

Oops!

I cannot for the life of me explain how COLDPLAY sidelined Tokyo Police Club and my beloved Chipmunks!!  I suspect it occurred while modeling the new CIUT t shirts for the website, and well, you know how photoshoots can distract you during a live broadcast.

Yes, we are a station of multi taskers.

Anyhow, I am leaving the playlist as it stands, although it isn't really how it finished, only because to me that would have been a more fitting way to finish the Christmas edition of Ruby Slippers.

If you have not had your seasonal dosage of Alvin and the gang, perhaps you will now be motivated to find the recording at your local library, sit back and sing along!

Cheers to all, and thanks for listening!

Ruby Slippers for Dec. 21 7-8 pm

Hey everybody!

(Flash, I suddenly realized that this salutation is how Chris Berube greeted his audience for years on Electric Boogaloo. What a great show that was.... however I digress)

It's that magical time when we are perhaps more harried than we should be and definitely more in need of a little lighthearted fun.  Given that today the world is supposed to end, (trust me to do a show as the global Titanic goes down)  I have tried to combine seasonal fare with straight up great music. Let me know what you think!

First Snow Of The Year---Hawksley Workman  (GET THIS SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!!)
No A**holes on Christmas---Stephanie Coplan and friends

Make You Mine---Cannoneers
The Noise---Austra
Them Kids---Sam Roberts (did you know he collected Royal Family Commemorative tins?)
Stray Dog---The Anthemeers
Locked Out---Freelance Whales
Tessellate---Tokyo Police Club
The Chipmunk Song-----Alvin, Theodore, Simon and Dave

Hope your hols are a blast, and as always, thanks for listening!
Back next week with the year end wrap up!

Oh, and the music bio that was considered the guiltiest pleasure from last week's question is "Girls Like Us", a combined career profile of Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King.

In loving memory of Roger  December 20, 1958 - July16, 2010

Hey everybody!!

It's that time of year when so much is going on that it's almost impossible to remember what day it is.
Making stuff, eating stuff, going out, coming in, watching holiday movies, paying bills (groan) and trying to deposit enough bread to cover them.  Thank Goodness for music, right?

Well, the spirit moved me about three days ago to assemble this Friday's playlist, and as I came up for air today, I thought, "Why not post early and entice the happily frantic among us to sit and listen on Friday night?"

Hey everybody,

This list is going up really early as the rest of the week is insanely busy.  The show will air on Saturday Dec 1 from 5-6 pm for the last time, and then it's off to the next frontier of Friday from 7-8 pm.

To help close this chapter our good friend Laura Lawton, Voice for Hire, has returned with her rockin' best, and all things being equal, will be contributing a periodic feature entitled "In Profile" to the show. She is working hard to get interviews with notable musicians from all over, but with a particular love for those in the Canadian music scene.
Anyhow, here is the playlist.  I hope you will follow along with us on Saturday, and in absense of a farewell fruit basket, I offer an amazing and varied show for our listeners in this slot.
Hope you will make the switch with us, but remember, the show is posted at www.ciut.fm under the title "Ruby Slippers" for a week after it airs in case you miss it.

Here goes....

Blue Monday---Buke and Gase  (another fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Sandy from this duo)

Hot Kitty---Tricky Woo  (let's hope time permits)

Well, that's it.  Thanks for following along with me through the first timeslot, and please come by on Fridays.  There's always a surprise or two waiting for you.

Wednesday, 10 October 2012

Hey, People, Join The CIUT Family!!!

Hey everybody!

It's the fall membership drive beginning now, and I have to say it's pretty exciting.
This is YOUR opportunity to become a member of the CIUT 89.5 FM  family by donating a mere $25! (Although any donation is of course really really appreciated by the umpteen volunteers at the station)

What happens to your donation?

It keeps the station on the air, that's what.  It pays for the transmittor, it keeps the equipment in tip top shape, it replaces the stuff that wheeze to a halt after it has served us well for the life of the equipment, it maintains our web feed, gosh, that money keeps us going so that you can listen 365 days a year for as long as you want.

None, and I repeat, none of this donation money makes its way to the programmers.  Not a single penny.

So...if you love radio, and are tired of being told what you should listen to by the Big Box commercial stations, please consider making a donation to the last community station in all of the Greater Toronto Area, and in fact the coolest station on the World Wide Web.

As the slogan goes  :  Your voice, your sound, your radio!   CIUT 89.5 FM.

Thanks for listening and see you soon!

Announcement. BIG NEWS!!!!! for Saturdays

Hey everybody!

Although the Guelph Jazz Festival this weekend and personal business next weekend will see my absence from the airwaves, never fear.  As of September 22, this timeslot, 5-6 pm Saturdays, will the the permanent home for yours truly.  HOWEVER, it needs a name.  And believe it or not, that's a lot harder to do than putting a show together.
Any thoughts?  You have been listening for the past three months, and your input is very valuable.

This is really exciting and to be honest, rather frightening... in a good way.
Next week, another programmer will be trying out their wings so give them a chance, and come back for the official kickoff.

Thanks for your support and of course for listening.
SEE YOU ON THE 22nd!

Playlist for July 28 5-6 pm

Hi everybody!  This is the third and final week of Hillside Saturdays and I have to admit to feeling a little sad, not only because I am not there in person with the 5,000 music fans at the Guelph Conservation Area, but also because this is my last week of playing songs by the impressive lineup for this year's festival.  However, here we go. (Spoiler alert... there will be the folk,  there will be the country, there will be the duwop, there will be the indie, there will be the rock, you get my drift)

There are people who have been to Hillside in the past, those who are there right this minute and those I kind of wish would be there in the years ahead.  Perhaps next year's lineup will surprise us all .

Found Blue Skies     Pat Robitaille
Let Loose The Horses     The Rescues
Don't Mean Anything     Adam Cohen
Ex-Punks     Bry Webb (of the Constantines)
I Kind Of Hate Songs With Ambiguous Lyrics     Geoff Berner  (Klezmer forever!!!)
She Goes Riding    Freeman Dre and the Kitchen Party
Butterfly Woman    Chic Gamine
Melody     Kate Earl
Bodies of Fiction     Library Voices
Two Places     Immaculate Machine
Blue Church Road     Collette Savard (from North Bay)
Lindsay     Elliott Brood
Drunk Teenagers     Joel Plaskett Emergency  (from the album Ashtray Rock) (Maybe not at Hillside every year, but this year for certain, and for my money OUGHT to be there each and every year)
Gardens of the Gods    The Bright Light Social Hour  (from Austin Texas)

I would like to thank the Toronto Public Library, especially the Annette Street Branch, for helping me source so much of this music.  Our libraries and the tireless librarians who keep us reading, listening and watching every day are world class.

Next week this show will be pre empted for a live broadcast of another (secret, shhh) music festival.  (For a hint go to the CIUT website)

Thanks for listening!! and see you soon.

Hello and Welcome

Greetings, listeners of CIUT!
I am a volunteer at an awesome community radio station, located in the heart of the Big City, at the University of Toronto campus.  I feel very grateful to be afforded the opportunity to do music programming live on a fill in basis, while certain time slots await their exciting new shows.
As I have had some calls about the playlists, however, I thought it fitting to let you in on the magical mix of stuff that makes up my pop up show.  So, folks, here goes.  I will go back a few weeks to bring you up to speed, and then update each week.
If there is something you have never heard before, be bold! Seek it out! and join me on the quest for the perfect mix.
A true salamagundi!
